Cell Phone Rant
Ok folks,
I generaly try to avoid rants because I can start them so easily and they tend to be purely negative, but I have to make an exception after last week.
First allow me to set the stage. Remember the days when we could go to the movies or theatre without the pleasent reminder to "please turn off all cell phones?" Well, one of the biggest differences starting back at college after my two year sabatical was the addition of "turn off cell phones" to the sylabus. Three teachers went out of their way to state how cell phones disrupting class annoyed them. How many of you psychics out there know where I'm going already?
A week ago Monday, during class, the instructor's cell phone rings. Not during her lecture... oh no. Her phone rang during a student's assigned in class presentation. The phone rang five times while the class looked around to see whose it was. Dr. Koepke finally realized it was coming from her bag and sheepishly turned it off without a word of acceptance or appology. Yes, she was one of the three who started the year specifically labeling this as a no no.

that is frusterating that the teacher did not appologize or anything.
on another note, i will say that i have gotten used to my cell phone, and even though i do not use it that much, i don't want to be without it. partly it is a security device that if i ever have trouble while driving, i have phone right there.
i did it agian. not anonymous... Heather
Curran, i hope you can get a chuckle out of this anyways. i don't know much about blogs
My first ever post on a blog. I'm now hip and up to date. Hmmmm....actually probably not. oh well.
Cell Phones. I got no problem with my cell phone. I don't feel like it's an eletronic colar nor do I feel obligated to answer it. That being said I answer it, with ensthusiasim everytime. My thought process,
"Wow, someone wants to talk to me?!"
Everytime. Maybe you can tell I don't get called all that often.
The power of peer pressure is getting to me. I've been one of the last memebers of this society to hold out on cell phones, but even I find myself wishing some days for the constant ability to stay conected with the world. (Not that I'm called more than three times a week).
Its enought to make me consider retreating to the hermitic life in an Ozark cave with just my pet goat for company.
Don't give in to the pressure Curran.
LUDDITES UNITE!!!
What's a "luddite" and do I want to be one?
Luddite- "Any of a group of British workers who between 1811 and 1816 rioted and destroyed laborsaving textile machinery in the belief that such machinery would diminish employment." So when decided on becoming a Luddite, one must ask: do you want to be dead?
In all seriousness, they're just anyone who opposed technological change. I would say that technology isn't inherently bad, but is developed according to certain assumptions and beliefs that can be good or bad. So, the British laborers in the 1800s were mad becuase industrialization-type technology was designed to de-skill labor and and further the class-based interests of the factory owners at their expense.
Cell phones though, hmmm. I travel between LA and San Luis Obispo constantly to see Lauren, and our rendevous become logistically difficult without communications while traveling, so I'm very attached to mine. I also always have it on vibrate because I'm deathly afraid of it going off rudely in any public place. Maybe we could install signal-blocking devices in classrooms?
Yes. I have definately heard of the labor riots and various other social forms people have taken againts technology, but I had not been aware of the name.
